To your health

I recently read an article from Newsweek regarding the passing of Natasha Richardson and Jade Goody and how, because they are so young, it’s struck a chord with moms.

I couldn’t agree more.  In Richardson’s case, a death from a minor fall?  For Goody, cervical cancer. I stopped and read the following from the author, Susanna Schrobsdorff, twice:

“We find it easy to postpone our own doctor’s appointments, but not the ones for the kids. We helmet them, but not ourselves. This is why airlines still have to remind parents to put their own oxygen masks on before they take care of the kids.”

That comment is me, through, and through.

I’m still trying to find my footing in the mom world.  My only child turns one in two days.  I call my mom almost everytime she sneezes (still) or ask a friend who has experience.  The first time my daughter threw up (not spit-up the real thing) I called a friend, an experienced mom, thinking she was going to die.  (How can so much come out of that little belly?)

But, what I didn’t do, was go to the doctor or even call one, regarding the lump that developed in the area of a lymph node while I was pregant.  The lump had been there almost nine months, and kept growing.  “It will go away” I kept telling my husband.  Finally, he knocked me back to reality by asking this question, “What about Addison and me?”  “What will we do if it is something bad?”

Luckily, two months later when I finally had the lump surgically removed, I found out it was benign.  And swore I’d never make the same mistake twice.

But, like Schrobsdorff said in her article, many months have passed, I have another reason to see the doctor, but a million reasons not to call and schedule the appointment.

This spring, I’m going to break that trend.  I’ll start by making a dentist appointment, then, call the doctor.  Heck, I might even go to Legal Zoom and get that long over due will written.

I’ll start making the calls, next week.
