Giving a Hand To Those Out Of Work

For those Moms who are underemployed or out of work or have family members or know people who are underemployed or out of work, I saw these two articles which I thought were good ideas for everyone.

NY Times – Not Laid Off? How to Aid the Less Fortunate

You probably have friends and former colleagues in this unfortunate spot.

So what can you do to help them? Plenty, it turns out.

The impulse is to open your Rolodex, suggest a few names and leave it at that. But there is so much more that you can do, including helping out with baby-sitting or getting their home in shape for sale, that will provide a lift without making people feel like a charity case.

The NY Times article then goes on to list 7 ideas to help the out of work, including using social media like Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook to help them find work, offering office space, linking people up with those you know, patronizing those who are consulting, organizing playdates for their kids, making dinner, helping them with ebay and lending money.

The Wall Street Journal goes one step further and gives you advice on mentoring job seekers, and specifically mentions the Job Angels account on Twitter, which matches up job seekers and open positions.

WSJ – Strangers Lend a Hand to Job Seekers

All great ideas, do you have any ideas that you want to share? Why not submit a comment?
