Harried and hassled, the latest on working moms

Working women remain harried and often ambivalent about their ability to do it all.

Who can blame us? It is a slog. You may wonder if other “moms like me” face the same challenges. They do.

A strong majority of all working mothers (62%) say they would prefer to work part time, says a major new study by the Pew Research Center.

Only 37% of working moms would prefer to work full time. Working fathers have a much different perspective. An overwhelming majority (79%) say they prefer full-time work. Only one-in-five say they would choose part-time work.

Changing role of women

Changing role of women

The report is well worth reading.

An excerpt:

“Many women remain conflicted about the competing roles they play at work and at home. Working mothers in particular are ambivalent about whether full-time work is the best thing for them or their children; they feel the tug of family much more acutely than do working fathers. As a result, most working mothers find themselves in a situation that they say is less than ideal.”

More part time jobs please

Okay, it still defeats me why more employees don’t offer more part-time work.

  • Women want the flexibility (those who can afford to worker fewer hours)
  • Women who have the ability to care for their kids and work in a job that accommodate this desire are much more loyal to their employees.
  • I hate to say this out loud but women who have this flexibility will often trade salary increases.
