While the majority of women today enter the workforce at some point in their lives, the birth of a child often causes a woman to rethink her career, at least on a temporary basis. Among other concerns, a new mother often must weigh relevant financial concerns, including not only overall household income, but also the costs of daycare, taxes, and other job-related expenses. In some cases, a family may determine that it is simply not cost-effective for a new mother to return to work, when comparing the costs of the mother working vs. the financial impact to the household income of the mother staying at home with the new child.

The first step toward evaluating whether one parent should forego work and remain at home for childcare purposes involves drafting a household budget for both of your potential situations, including one with both parents working and producing income, and one with only one parent working and contributing to the family income. The budget process will help clarify your financial situation. One thing that you may discover is that returning to work may not do much to increase your household income, especially after paying for costs such as childcare, transportation and taxes.

The Marriage Tax Penalty

Our national income tax system places a penalty on married couples with two significant incomes. The combined income of the couple will inevitably push the couple into a higher tax bracket, which causes the couple to owe more in income taxes. This so-called “marriage penalty” actually works as a disincentive for both spouses to work. In some cases, the tax savings may be substantial if one spouse stays home and provides child care, as the family may fall within a much lower tax bracket, thus causing the family to owe less in income taxes.

The Child Tax Credit

Furthermore, by having only one spouse work, your lower tax bracket may entitle you to claim the child tax credit, and even the additional child tax credit in some circumstances. If you are eligible for the child tax credit, you may be able to reduce your income taxes by as much as $1,000 for each qualified minor child. Your child qualifies for the child tax credit if he or she meets the following criteria:

The child was age 16 or younger at the end of the tax year.

The child was your biological child, stepchild, foster child, adopted child, sibling, stepsibling, or any of their offspring including your grandchild, niece or nephew.

The child cannot have provided more than half of his or her own financial support.

You have claimed the child as your dependent on your federal tax return.

The child is a citizen, national, or resident alien of the U.S.

The child has lived with you for more than half of the calendar year for which you must pay taxes.

Your ability to claim the full child tax credit is directly tied to your household’s adjusted gross income, your filing status, and the amount that you owe in income taxes or any alternative minimum tax. As your adjusted gross income rises, the child tax credit phases out.

Moreover, you may be able to claim an additional child tax credit in some circumstances, such as where the income taxes that you owe are too low for you to claim the entire amount of the child tax credit. Therefore, substantially lowering your family’s adjusted gross income by having only one spouse work can entitle you to tax credits that otherwise would be unavailable to you due to your income.

Dependent and Child Care Tax Credit

If both you and your spouse work, and you must pay a qualified caregiver or daycare facility in order for you both to work, then you should be able to claim the dependent and child care tax credit. Based on your income, you are entitled to a tax credit for a certain percentage of the eligible child care expenses that you paid. This percentage ranges from 20% of the expenses that you paid to 35% of the expenses. In any case, this tax credit is capped at $3,000 for one eligible child and $6,000 for two eligible children.

If you wish to claim the dependent and child care tax credit, you must meet the following conditions:

The expenses were for the care of a child under the age of 13 or a spouse or dependent who was unable to care for himself or herself due to a mental or physical condition.

You and your spouse had earned income for the tax year.

The child care provider that you paid for your child’s care is not one of your dependents.

You paid for child care so that you and/or your spouse could work or look for work.

Assuming that you meet all of the above requirements, you can claim a tax credit for a certain percentage of the child care expenses that you paid. If, however, your employer deducted amounts from your wages pre-tax for the purposes of qualified child care expenses, those amounts reduce the amount of the child care tax credit that you can claim.

There are a variety of factors to consider when deciding to go back to work after the birth of a child. Tax issues – such as the marriage tax penalty, the child tax credit, and the dependent and child care tax credit – should all factor into the decision-making process. Whatever your situation may be, carefully considering these issues is essential to making the right decision for your family.

Since this past summer, MomsToWork has been offering a niche job board for our readers and the larger Internet population. We’ve focused primarily on non-traditional jobs – such as jobs that are part time, flexible or telecommute. The response we’ve seen has been overwhelming.

Here’s what we’ve learned during this time.

For prospective job applicants:
1)A job board should only be one of the tools you use to find a new position. That being said, many people start looking for jobs online.

2)Learn how to use keywords before using a job board, since a query like part time home depot will give you a different result than using quotations such as “part time” “home depot” or even “part time home depot”.

Top tip: To get the most accurate results, use quotes around each phrase not a sentence. “part time” “michaels” OR “work at home” “data entry”

3)If you’re doing more than just curiously looking around, you should have a cover letter and resume proofread and in electronic format as most employers require electronic applications these days.

4)Do research before blindly applying for an open position. For example, visit the Web site of an employer to understand what the company is all about.

5)If you don’t see your dream job listed online, why not contact the Human Resources department of a company you are interested in? Many jobs go unlisted online or are only posted internally. You never know.

For prospective employers:
1)A job board should only be one of the tools you use to recruit new talent. That being said, many people start looking for jobs online.

2)Niche job boards may give you a better bang for the buck in terms of fees as they already have a interested readership.

3)If you’re posting a job online, you should provide a method for prospective employees to apply to your position electronically. Even if it’s an email address.

4)A surprising (to us) amount of candidates search for jobs geographically via search engines, using terms such as “Sales Executive Los Angeles CA” or “Seasonal Jobs Michigan“. Try keywording your job postings accordingly to attract quality search engine based traffic.

We hope this guide has helped – to all, good luck!

It’s that time of year again … Christmas is just days away and we’ve got some excited kids to keep occupied. Here’s a list of some cute online holiday activities to fill the days.

- A personalized Santa video directly from the North Pole. A company in Canada has created a wonderful Santa video. Parents, you do need to personalize the video, but for the 4-8 year old set, the resulting video is perfect. And for older kids, the laugh is worth it.

- Leave a message for Santa. If your children really, really need to tell Santa just one more thing, this is the place to start. You can call this free 24/7 Santa Hotline and leave a message with one of his live elves.

- Christmas coloring pages. We liked these sets and these.

- Google has some cute tricks up its sleeve this year: in the Google search bar, type in “Hannukah” (no quotes) or “let it snow” (no quotes) and watch the magic.

- As always, your kids can track Santa around the world with NORAD. Tracking begins on Christmas Eve.

Have any other great Holiday activities, let us know in the comments!

This is part of a series about relocating a family internationally, called What I’ve Lost, What I’ve Gained, for BlogHer’s month of blogging.

What do you call a woman or a man who follows her spouse as he or she relocates for work, often sacrificing a career and identity? These spouses pack up the family, leave their friends and relatives behind, quit jobs, book clubs and gyms, and travel from one city or country to another, and traverse continents, time zones and cultures.

Trailing spouse is the most common term. It is the technical expression used by relocation experts. But it is one of the ugliest phrase you’ll hear, alive with meaning. For me, it always brings to mind the snail, whose head pops out ahead of the shell, leaving a slimy, glistening trail in his wake, which somebody (oh yeah, the trailing spouse) has to clean up.

Yet trailing spouse is what I’ve been and become over the past 16 years. And for 16 years, I’ve wanted for a better expression.

While I’ve been lucky enough to work full-time, unlike many of my fellow trailing spouses, my career was shaped by my partner’s. When he moved to Philadelphia, I did. I could’ve said no, but I didn’t.

Our trail led from Canberra, Australia, to Philadelphia, USA, where the aforementioned spouse was doing a mid career doctorate in economics. The trail then went south to DC, where he got a job. Then, just as we were settling into a routine in a new house with our then three year old twin boys, our trail took a detour to Paris, where I was unable to work.

“Paris!” you say, “That’s no sacrifice.”

But in Paris and around the world, I’ve met many women and some men who had full careers in their own countries, but could no longer work in the new city because of rules, regulations, language or logistics.

They waved their spouses off to a new, often exciting, job; unpacked the bags and the boxes; settled their kids into new schools; then found the supermarket, the post office, a doctor, etc.; and arranged to get the phone, internet, TV installed and connected.

After all that, they thought? “What the f..k do I do now?” (For me, the next question was “And how do I say that in French?”)

Got a better term than trailing spouse?

What do YOU call a woman or a man who follows her spouse around the world, often sacrificing their jobs, careers and sanity?

My contenders?

Love sick

Idiot

Saint

Selfless

Acolyte

Relocation expert

International logistical planner, or

CEO/international ops

Have you been through this? How did you survive?

We’re back in Sydney now for good, a trail I was happy to take. But here I am, kids off at school, spouse happy in his new job, at home thinking about when and where to work. The same old problems with identity (who am I when I am not working?), etc.

I think my time as a trailing spouse is over. But to the rest of you out there, I thank you … for your service, patience and ability to negotiate new schools, supermarkets and do sub-par jobs taken just for the sake of working.

Moving is a liberating bitch. You lose so much, you gain a lot. After 16 years in the USA, in July we moved our family back to Australia, partly to spend time with our parents, three of whom suffer from dementia and Alzheimer’s. During Blogher’s month of blogging, I’m going to post every day on the theme, “What I’ve Lost, What I’ve Gained, ” a light-hearted account of relocating a family with 9 year old twins.

My mother cuts through the water without a splash. She manages about 200 metres of evenly-paced freestyle before she stops and grins at me, panting behind her. Even in her demented state, she can out-swim her daughter. It still gives her pleasure.

These days, swimming is the only thing she does smoothly and without hesitation.

Getting to the pool took 90 minutes of negotiation. She didn’t want to swim so she took off her bathers before we left, after it had taken 30 minutes to convince her to put them on. Her rings came on and off, as did her hearing aids and her “ear things” (her earrings). Off and on, off and on.

One watch was taken off, another was put on. Neither mattered really. It’s been ages since she could tell the time.

After getting Mum in the car, I tell her to stay put for a sec. I dash back into her house to grab her swimmers, which I hide inside her hat, something she tells me she’s never used before.

My mum: In the water, she's Esther Williams

As we head up the headland toward the beach, we note the trees in bloom. She can’t remember any of their names, so I point out the oleander, the jacarandas with their purple finger gloves and some bougainvillea that someone has hacked back.

When the beach comes into sight, she smiles and asks me where her bathers are.

“In the car,” I say with a smile.

When she retired from work about five years ago, she often swam 2 kms a day. Now, she’s forgotten she loves to swim. Today the Alzheimer’s specialist told me she only had less than a year left in her own home. “It’s a terminal disease,” she reminded us. Isn’t life?

In the pool, she was my old mum, the old Jan, but without the prickly bits. Over a post-swim lunch, she looks snappy and happy wearing a “head thing.” That’s a hat for those of you who don’t live in the land of demented.

Moving is a liberating bitch. You lose so much, you gain a lot. After 16 years in the USA, we moved our family back to Australia four months ago. During Blogher’s month of blogging, I’m going to post every day on the theme, “What I’ve Lost, What I’ve Gained, ” a light-hearted account of relocating a family with 9 year old twins.)

After our first winter in Sydney for 20 years, I’m convinced Ugg Australia, the sheepskin boot company, should have a new slogan: “Uggs: The footwear for winter deniers.”

I’ve lived in London, UK; Philadelphia, Bethesda and Washington, DC, in the USA; and Paris, France; but the bitterest cold I’ve experienced was winter in Sydney. Blizzards may close schools and bring down power lines in North America, but people who live in those cities concede there is a need for heating.

My memory of winter in Sydney was of us kids getting dressed for school in front of a two-bar radiator, of shoes that never dried out, and of worn wool Onkaparinga blankets that were scratchy, heavy and moth-bally. To stay warm, we suffocated under three or four grey or faded pink blankets piled heavy on top.

Blogher Glorious Madness

For years, I had scars from burns on the back of my calves from leaning too close to the heater. My first grown up sweater, beige wool designed to go with a maxi dress and high boots, smelled of burnt wool because it would only dry if it was toasted over the radiator.

Aussies are winter deniers

Winter here means houses are colder inside than out. The days are often blue and beautiful, and the nights are cold and crisp. Like the people of Mexico, we Aussies are winter deniers. Men wear shorts year round. The mean temperature for Sydney this July was 13 degree Celsius /55 F, with some days up in the 60s F and low 70s F, with temperatures dropping to around 5 degree Celsius/41 F at night.

In the States, the central heating blasted all winter long. We wore tee shirts inside and slept under a light blanket. Once we cranked up our old boiler, it was hard to stop.

Winter in Sydney means flannelette pajamas, electric blankets, two comforters and cold, drippy, red noses. Winter means getting warmly dressed before you go inside on a mild winter’s day. You don’t get undressed at bedtime, you get re-dressed.

Winter means lectures from relatives on how you aren’t dressing your kids properly.

One sunny July day, we started shivering as soon as we entered my parents’ house. It was only 9 degrees Celsius outside and inside it was like an igloo. Still, it was too warm to turn on the heater, an attitude shared by many Australians.

“Boys, your mother has to teach you how to dress properly,” said my stepmother.

“Look what I’ve got on,” she said to my twin sons, who were both wearing long sleeve T-shirts covered by American fleece sweatshirts.

She peeled back each layer like an archeological dig.

After her underwear came a thermal spencer (undershirt), then a shirt, and two sweaters on top (all wool). On the bottom, under her jeans, came woolly socks inside high, woolly Ugg boots.

The popularity of wool accounts for a particular look and smell in the Australian winter.

I couldn’t work out why Australians looked so different from their counterparts in Northern America during winter.

It took me a while, but then it came to me. Australia got rich on the sheep’s back (wool exports) and we’ve retained our love of the old, the hand-knitted, the moth-holey, the bulky, wool sweater. Often these “jumpers,” as we call them, look and smell like they’ve been dug out of a camphor box for the past 40 years. Where is the smart fleece? The Polartec? They exist, but the prices are too high to prevent them displacing worn woolly funky, rich smelling wool jumpers/ sweaters.

We’ve now got central heating, but like most Australians, we’ve learned to only turn it on when you can no longer feel your toes, fingers or nose … or when guests are coming.

Australians seem more frugal, more conscious of the environment, it seems, than the average American. The worst of Australia’s 12 year drought is over, but leaving a tap dripping is close to a crime, and not flushing the toilet profligately (“If it’s yellow, let it mellow”) was natural for my nine year old twin boys.

Oh yeah, I nearly forgot. We now all have Ugg boots, thanks to my lovely stepmother.

When someone complains they’re cold, one of us responds:

“Go put your Uggs on. Save the environment. Cut the heating bill.”

We’re not entirely joking.

Moving is a liberating bitch. You lose so much, you gain a lot. After 16 years of living in the USA, we moved back to Australia (where we were both born, raised, educated, worked, etc.) nearly four months ago. During Blogher’s month of blogging, I’m going to try to post every day on the theme, “What I’ve Lost, What I’ve Gained, ” starting with today’s short post:

You never know what you’ve got until its gone.

Given the nature of this series, you may have thought that today’s post will detail my sadness at missing my friends. Yes, I miss you all.

But what we miss here on a day to day, breakfast to breakfast, minute by minute, basis is bananas. Big yellow smelly bananas.

We don’t have them. We can’t afford Aussie bananas. Cyclone Yasi wiped out the Australian banana crop.

In the USA, we always had too many. Our fridge was full of frozen, brown ones that one day were destined for banana smoothies that the kids never learned to love. Sometimes, a banana was only a few pennies.

In Australia, they’re a luxurious treat, which we salivate over.

In my first week back in Australia, I went grocery shopping in a jet-lagged haze and was shocked by the final bill, $80, for a handful of items.

A closer look showed I’d paid $11 for two bananas. At that price, they seemed more delicious than any other bananas I’d ever eaten.

Since then, I’ve been more careful about looking at prices and considering the conversion, pounds to kilograms. Sometimes, I buy a banana for lunch when I am out shopping. I am careful to hide the evidence.

When visitors come over for dinner, we don’t buy just expensive cheeses or wines. We buy bananas. Nothing says we’ve spared no expense for you, our special guest, than a $10 banana sitting among the inexpensive pathetic apples and the even cheaper, so boring, oranges.

“You bought a banana for our fruit salad!” guests exclaim. “You shouldn’t have.”

During casual visits to friends and families, I’ve seen folks rush to hide their bananas. A family member justified his purchase of expensive bananas as a medical necessity. It’s the potassium, you know.

Prices are falling (now only $6.98 a kilo. About $1 each on my last shop.) and slowly the banana as a luxury brand is receding. Bananas are no longer the Louis Vuitton of fruit, but more like Gap in the USA or Witchery in Australia.

But it’s been nice to be forced to look at something that we took for granted in the USA in a different light.

Bananas, I apologise. You were always there for me, and I didn’t love you enough.

Julie Power, a cofounder of MomstoWork.com, recently quit her full-time job and relocated her family from Bethesda, USA, to Sydney, Australia. She plans to return to work just as soon as she can stop blogging and finish updating that darn resume.

What email address is right for my job search?

JuliePower589@gmail.com didn’t sound memorable enough for my newly-updated resume or job application.

I’ve seen folks use email addresses and handles like fabcookandmotherroftwins@gmail.com and SexyLongLegs@Hotmail.com for job applications or on LinkedIn, but call me old fashioned, but it doesn’t seem professional enough to me …

If I use one of my existing email addresses, such as JuliePowerwritereditor@gmail.com, it limits me to a narrow band of media jobs in a contracting market. (Besides, the password is lost, never to be retrieved again.)

So I tried to find a new Gmail address, using my first and last names, as recommended by most experts. Google’s Gmail confirmed that I am one of many Julie Powers. To differentiate from the other Julie Powers out there, including the Super Hero, Julie Power AKA Lightspeed, Gmail suggested:

jpjuliepower53

juliepwr362
power.juliepower.julie
julie.power4, etc..

Julie Power 4 is the best of a bad lot. The rest are totally forgettable and hard for an HR person to recall. When I considered using one of my existing Rocketmail email addresses, a good friend asked if I’d heard of Google. Ouch. That’s not a good look for someone like me touting her new media skills.

I asked what HR experts thought of something like HireJuliePower@gmail.com.

Catchy? Silly?

Julie Power, lightspeed, can do anything.

Is it unprofessional? Or is it just the thing to stand out in the inbox of that jaded HR expert? For feedback, I went to the MomstoWork brain trust, our Twitter followers:

HR experts: What do you think of an email address like “HireJohnSmith@gmail.com” ? Good or bad idea?

The very helpful @PrettyPinkPro (must ask her whether this is her email because it conjures up other versions of pros to me, if you get my drift), replied:

I responded:

She replied at length, arguing that it was too much of a gamble that it would be seen as gimmicky.

As background, four months ago we sold our house in Maryland, USA, quit our jobs, took the kids out of school, and moved back to Australia after 16 years in the USA. While I am not in a rush to go back to work, I do have to update my American resume and find a fresh email address, just in case the perfect job comes along.

What kind of email address do you use for finding a job? What’s the silliest email address you’ve seen? The dumbest you’ve seen on a resume?

Last night, I read to my kids, kissed them goodnight, turned off the light, and guess what? Miracle of miracles, they went to sleep.

For the nine years of our twins’ lives, bedtime has been something that we’ve often dreaded and delayed just to put off the kids’ delaying tactics (how pathetic is that?). The delays and the arguments exhausted us to the detriment of our relationship.

Not surprisingly, I’m one of the many parents who loved the book “Go the F**k to Sleep” by Adam Mansbach and Ricardo Cortes and this hilarious YouTube video, narrated by Australian actress, mother and host of Australian kid show, Noni Hazelhurst.

So why are our kids sleeping now?

Three months ago, we moved home to Australia from the USA, where the kids were born and raised and where we lived for 16 years. Since starting school in early July, our boys are going to sleep faster and sleeping longer.

Why? There are many reasons, but mostly, it is Australia’s emphasis on sport within school, which means the boys get double the amount of time outside doing sport during the school day. By night, they are plain tuckered out.

In Montgomery County, MD, where my kids went to school in the USA, most children had sport/physical education at school once a week. This is pretty much in line with 2003 findings by the Eunice Shriver Kennedy National Institute of Child Health and Human Development showing third grade children received an average of 25 minutes a week in school of moderate to vigorous activity.

At the boys’ school in Chevy Chase, MD, they were outdoors for only 30 minutes a day for recess after eating lunch indoors if the weather wasn’t too hot, too cold, too humid, etc. or just too too something.

In contrast, in NSW, where my boys go to school now, my sons have school sport for 90 minutes twice a week during the school day. They also have daily outdoor recess at 11 a.m., about 20 minutes, plus playtime after lunch at 1 p.m., of about 50 minutes after they’ve eaten sitting in the school playground. In summer, the kids do swimming lessons at school for an hour each week. This adds up to about 100 minutes of sport each day in Australia versus about 50 minutes in the USA.

Unlike the US, where my kids rode the bus, they start and end the school day by walking to and from school. It’s about 850 metres. (To my amazement, after the tight leash which kids are kept on back in the USA, the streets here are full of unaccompanied children, some as young as five or six, who walking, scootering or biking, to and from school or to a friend’s place.)

The Aussie emphasis on sport at school flows on at home. One homework assignment here was to go outside to play for 30 minutes a day, or run or bike, or whatever.

In the USA, the boys did exercise after school (basketball, swimming, trampolining, kicking a football), but on some days that was the only exercise they got.

Another bonus: The kids eat more, they’re less fussy (they’ll wolf down a head of broccoli when hungry) when hungry and exercised, and at last, they sleep.

Online job search tip: Some retailers use the keywords “Seasonal” or “Holiday” and others the keywords “Hourly”, “Part Time” or “Temporary”. So, if you don’t see results on your initial job search, try another keyword.
